What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation refers to a range of techniques used to help patients feel more comfortable during dental procedures. Our dentists can determine whether dental sedation is right for you.

At Southwest Dental Care, we do what we can to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during their dental appointments.

In addition to offering sedation options, we will work through your treatment at your pace, take breaks whenever you need them, and provide calm reassurance as needed.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled from a mask which is placed over your mouth and nose. The medication helps to calm patients even though they remain awake and able to communicate. Nitrous oxide may help to lessen anxiety, increase pain threshold, reduce gag reflex and make time pass more quickly.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedatives may be provided to you in the form of pills or liquids prescribed by your dentist. This sedation medication is taken orally in advance of your dental appointment. Oral sedation allows you to remain awake for the procedure but produces a calming effect that will significantly relax you.

IV Sedation

IV sedatives are the deepest level of sedation without general anesthesia and are administered directly into the bloodstream through the vein. Our dental team will attach you to a monitor so that your dentist will be able to keep track of your vital signs during the procedure.
