At Southwest Dental Care in London, our dentists perform a variety of oral surgery procedures to try and treat dental issues and improve your oral health.
What is Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery is a branch of dentistry that includes the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases, injuries and defects of the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, teeth and jaws.
While our dentists always use the least invasive treatment possible for a given dental problem, in some cases, less invasive treatment options are simply not sufficient to resolve the problem and oral surgery is required.
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that functions much like the root of a natural tooth. Our dentists can place dental implants as part of the process to replace missing teeth and restore the function of your smile. Implants, together with a tooth replacement such as a crown or bridge, should look much like natural teeth.
The gum grafting procedure involves taking gum tissue from the roof of the mouth and transplanting it onto other areas of the gums. Gum grafts are performed on patients who are experiencing receding gums that are exposing the roots and nerves in the teeth, causing pain and extreme sensitivity.
While it's always preferable to save a natural tooth, there are some cases where it is simply not possible. If a tooth is too badly damaged to be repaired as a result of decay, gum disease or injury, it may need to be removed by your dentist.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt in the very back corners of the adult mouth. If the wisdom teeth begin causing problems for your oral hygiene or become painful, your dentist may recommend removing them to help preserve your oral health.
The frenectomy procedure can eliminate a problematic frenum, (a small piece of tissue that connects your cheeks, tongue or lips to your gum area). Our dentists perform frenectomies for babies, children and adults if the frenum is restricting normal function, conditions which are commonly referred to as tongue-tied, lip-tied or cheek-tied.
Bone Grafts & Sinus Lifts
Bone grafting is a procedure where your dentist adds bone tissue to your jaw bone, increasing the jaw's strength and making dental implants possible. A sinus lift is a type of bone graft where your dentist adds bone material to the upper back jaw in order to raise and increase the amount of bone in the sinus area to place a dental implant.
