Southwest Dental Care is proud to provide wisdom teeth services, focusing on preserving the healthy tooth structure and alignment of each of our patients’ smiles.
Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that surface in your mouth, emerging in your late teens or early twenties. When wisdom teeth grow in, they can significantly affect the structure of your smile: these new teeth may grow in misaligned, damaging your teeth, and disrupting the natural alignment of your pre-existing teeth.
Wisdom teeth that are misaligned can grow out either horizontally, angled, or may grow inward or outward. Poor alignment of the teeth can crowd or damage adjacent teeth, your jawbone, and even your nerves.
When wisdom teeth cannot fully grow out – they tend to do so partially. When a wisdom tooth is partially grown out, it is easy for bacteria to enter around the tooth and gums, causing infection and tooth decay, resulting in swelling, pain, jaw stiffness, and more.
A fully grown wisdom tooth can be easily extracted as any other tooth. A wisdom tooth that is underneath the gums and planted in the jawbone however, will require an incision into the gums and then partial removal of the bone that lies over the tooth.
